Cultural players express deep frustration at the approach of the presidential ballot on March 24. Their main concern is the failure to comply with law n°2008-09, which aims to protect artistic works, copyright and related rights. Some presidential candidates have solicited songs for propaganda purposes, ignoring the laws governing the use of protected works.
With this in mind, the artists, represented by the Société du droit d'auteur et des droits voisins (SODAV), are calling on the candidates to comply with current legislation. They urge them to pay the royalties due for use of the artists' repertoire during the election campaign.
In addition, the cultural players denounce the lack of consideration shown by the candidates for culture in their respective programs. They regret that none of the 19 candidates is proposing a cultural project that is sufficiently attractive to the artistic community. In their view, the absence of clear cultural policies in most of the programs demonstrates that the cultural sector is not a priority for the candidates, even though it offers significant potential in terms of job creation.
With this in mind, they encourage candidates to work closely with cultural professionals to develop a dynamic sector that contributes to the economic and social progress of the country. Senegal.
