The Pr Bassirou Diomaye Faye reaffirmed the Senegal to the ECOWAS as a founding member, underlining the relations of cooperation and friendship that Senegal has maintained with the other members since the founding fathers. He stressed the importance of continuing to work together to strengthen the community and focus on the projects and initiatives that unite them.
He also stressed the need to overcome the clichés and stereotypes that portray ECOWAS as an organization influenced by outside powers and remote from the populations it is meant to serve. He called for in-depth reflection on the extreme community sanctions which, in his view, aggravate economic and social difficulties and reinforce a negative image of the institution.
Pr Faye warned against the potential withdrawal of three member countries from ECOWAS, which he said would be a catastrophic scenario and a betrayal of the Pan-Africanism bequeathed by the founding fathers. He stressed the historic responsibility of preserving this legacy and passing it on to future generations.
Finally, he called for the reforms needed to adapt ECOWAS to current realities and consolidate collective progress towards the organization's common goals.
