The city of Saint-Louis was the scene of violence on Monday, during the passage of the national caravan of the Sam Sa Kaadu and Takku-Wallu inter-coalition. Governor Al Hassan Sall strongly condemned the incidents in a press release.
According to the authorities, 81 people were arrested following the scuffles. The governor called on the population and political players to ban all forms of violence and to conduct their activities in compliance with the laws and regulations in force.
Instructions have been given to law enforcement agencies, including the Police and the GendarmerieIn order to reinforce security and the protection of property during the passage of political caravans in the region. A reinforced security system has also been put in place in the vicinity of the central police station in the tercentenary city.
The governor stressed that it is now imperative to systematically oppose the meeting of political caravans and to redouble vigilance to ensure strict compliance with the ban on the bearing arms. Law enforcement officers will search any vehicle suspected of carrying or any person suspected of possessing it.
The violence comes against a tense electoral backdrop, as the various political coalitions step up their campaign activities in the run-up to the vote. The authorities are calling for restraint and respect for democratic procedures to avoid any further outbursts.
