In a joint statement with the Conseil pour l'observation des règles d'éthique et de déontologie dans les médias (Cored), the Ministère de la Communication, des Télécommunications et du Numérique has announced that the official list of press will be published by November 30, 2024 at the latest.
This publication follows the first meeting of the commission for validating press company declarations, which has been in place since June 25, 2024, when the Ministry announced its roadmap for revising the Press Code.
"In six months, strong actions have been taken to promote transparency and the restructuring of the sector," says the press release. The Ministry points out that it "is not in charge of regulation or self-regulation, but remains fully committed to the process of restructuring and cleaning up the media sector".
Concern about incitement to violence
The Ministry and Cored also express concern about the role of the media in the current electoral context, marked by "several incidents" and "calls for violence relayed by traditional and online media".
"These facts are a reminder of the urgent need to complete the process of restructuring the media sector in order to promote ethical and responsible journalism", conclude the Ministry and Cored, calling on the media to contribute to the "pacification of the political space and the promotion of social cohesion".
Media not complying with current regulations may be subject to formal notice and suspension if they fail to rectify their situation.
