On September 5, 2024, the Senegal has taken a major step towards its space ambitions by joining the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). The agreement, signed by Maram Kairé, Director General of the Agence Sénégalaise d'Études Spatiales (ASES), and Li Guoping, Director of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), took place during the International Conference on Deep Space in Paris. This partnership comes after the launch of Senegal's first nanosatellite, Gaindesat-1A, and strengthens the country's space capabilities. By joining this Chinese-led project, Senegal is one of the leading African nations in lunar exploration, alongside Egypt and South Africa.
The ILRS aims to build a lunar robotic station by 2035, marking a significant step forward in international scientific and technological cooperation.
